  • Open Call to What's the Word?: By Us and About Us

    The theme of the fourth annual exhibition aligns with the national theme for Black History Month as determined by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

    The 2027 theme explores how African American communication, identity expression, and activism have evolved over time.

    • The submission deadline is December 1, 2026

    • Artists will be notified by January 3, 2027

    • Jury results will be announced by January 6, 2027

    In 2026, the United States will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence - a historic milestone in the narrative of freedom. It will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of what would become Black History Month, a century-long acknowledgement of the voices, struggles, achievements, and perseverance of Black America.

    But what is freedom when it is delayed, denied or or distorted?
